The Story of Grand Royal Barbers Darlinghurst
Opened in 2002 by Maria Dillon.
Maria who originally came from Scotland trained as a hairdresser in her hometown of Greenock, once qualified she chose to focus on barbering. Moving to London to hone her skills in hair cutting & beard-trimming many of her clients were on the Tower of Londons’ Beefeaters.
Arriving in Sydney in 1998 and finding it tough to get a job in a barbershop that offered quality work Maria could see there was a huge gap in the market for an upmarket contemporary barbershop that offered modern men’s hairdressing with great customer service. Grand Royal Barbers Darlinghurst quickly became the place to go for the stylish man who wanted more than just a 5-minute short back & sides.
Shortly after opening Movember approached Maria to use the barbershop so they could launch their then-small charity to the press of Sydney

We are Sydney’s 1st SUSTAINABLE BARBERSHOP where all our waste including hair gets recycled. We have partnered with Sustainable Salons an environmental movement that removes and recycles our waste. Hair booms are just 1 of many projects that our clients’ hair clippings go to make.
A word from sustainable salons… WHAT WE DO WITH ALL THE HAIR?
HAIR BOOMS.. Synthetic booms and chemical dispersants cause damaging long-term side effects on the environment. Hair booms, however, are an organic alternative that’s even more effective at soaking up oil. A standard boom can soak up to 4L of oil and can even be drained and reused up to two more times. Talk about the power of hair.
We now offer beer and scotch whiskey on arrival.
Over the years some of the team have had the opportunity to travel to Arnhem Land and Uluru to work alongside the team at Short Back & Sidewalks a charity that offers haircuts free of charge and free of judgment.
We strive to find the best products and solutions for our clients’ hair and scalp concerns whether it’s fine hair, coarse hair, or thinning hair.
Dr Jonathan Hopkirk our house Doctor specialises in hair loss solutions solutions, private complimentary consultations are offered to all our clients.
